"Marking read"

The topics marked as read must be linked to IP address and not user name.  I check BD on 3 separate computers, and it will mark topics read only on the computer I used to read that post.

Nothing major, just annoying.  Any chance of a "mark all read" within the forums?

Just grumbling.  evileye

I don't think so. But I'll ask

Thanks, Jon. It really is annoying to read all the posts on computer #1, go to computer #2 and have them all marked as unread, click on them all to get them marked as read, and then come to work and have to do it all over again!

The same thing would be true in reverse, as well. If there were two members using the same computer to access the forum, they would have to review every thread to see which ones were new

Their response

New post tracking for Active Board users works by storing cookies on
your computer, keyed to your specific account. This means that multiple
users on the same computer can indeed use the button without interfering
with each other.

However, this means it breaks completely when you switch computers, as
you've found. At the moment we don't have any plans to change the
system to a database driven one, unfortunately, as all our development
time is wrapped up in other projects.

Sorry

Oh - what about a "mark all read" button WITHIN a forum? That would be perfectly acceptable!

I think the answer about having other fish to fry would be the same.

Teeny comment .... the recipe subforum is staying "unread" no matter how often I click on all the topics. As soon as I log off and come back, they are all unread again. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....

That happened to me - and then it stopped. I wish I knew what I did.

Just venting, but now each individual post in the Safe Haven forum gets marked "unread" as soon as I leave. I just spent 10 minutes clicking on each post and seeing them get marked as read. Then I logged out and came back, and all were "unread" again. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.....

what browser are you using?

I have converted us early to the new format. It may be that I jumped the gun

Okay, I'll try using it and see what happens. Normally I use Chrome (except when I am programming, M$FT still has to big a market share for me not to use them as the basis for what things look like.) and I strongly recommend it. It's faster, cleaner, and more up-to-date than FF or IE.

Did they do any updates today? Because the entire Safe Haven forum has been marked as unread again...  disbelief

Only for you, Karen. I wonder if there's some kind of cookie that gets deleted on your machine(s)

I couldn't understand why Karen was complaining so much about this before. Yesterday it happened to me & you should have heard the whining & complaining! That was a pain in the neck.

Did either of you perform some sort of "clean-up" that might have erased a cookie or two

Okay, I have submitted a help ticket, but while writing it, one thing occurred to me. The change to the new UI became system wide on the 8th (we changed early because I wanted to make sure it was as unnoticeable as I could make it.) If there was something changing at the moment you signed on or off, it might have messed up a cookie.

Maybe .... except they are "unread" again tonight. cry.gif

Really, a "mark all read" button INSIDE each forum would be so helpful, but yes, I know that won't happen.

Well, Maybe it will. I'll respond to their response with that suggestion - tell me why you think it would be better. Here's what they answered:

Hi Jon,

Very apt! There's actually a known issue which we're in the middle of
coming up with a permanent fix for related to this.

Essentially we are tracking the last post data for every single post and
forum on each ActiveBoard, however, after a certain number of cookies +
certain amount of data total over all cookies the browser will begin to
delete cookies randomly to reduce the limit. We delete some of the data
as we go, but it's an imperfect system.

Some side effects include items showing up as unread unexpectedly, and
in the worst case you might get logged out unexpectedly (login key
deleted).

The easiest temporary fix is actually to delete all your cookies, then
login again and click the "Mark All As Read" button.

Unfortunately, there isn't a simple fix for it, which is why we are in
the process of coming up with a more ingenious solution.

Let me know if you have any further questions! (I've marked it as
Unresolved, but feel free to reply and update it at any time.)

Cheers,

Jeff

Two of my members have, separately, complained that every message in one
forum suddenly showed up as unread this week. Both swear that they
have not cleaned out their cookies. Is there any explanation for this I
can give them? Could this have been caused by the switchover? (We are
early adopters, so we wouldn't have noticed any UI change.)

First of all, I'm impressed by their quick response! A good sign.

The "mark all read" button within a forum won't solve the problem, per se, but it will save opening every single thread, one by one, just to change it to "read" from "unread" ....

Y'know what? I have no idea how to mark anything read. I wonder if I don't thave that ability

Whenever you open a thread, and then go back to Safe Haven, it's automatically marked as read (i.e. the icon goes from yellow to grey). Using the back button doesn't work - have to click on "safe haven".

that's really the only way? The response I got implied something else, don't you think?

As far as I have been able to tell, the "Mark All As Read" button simply changes the icon on the main forum to read, not each thread within that forum.

Never Mind I found it and you are right, it does not change the status of each post - I bet they think it does.

Hi Jon,

It was implemented for forums to mark them all as read first, but it's
fair to assume that it should also mark topics as read. I'll update the
behaviour shortly. smile.gif

The problem with the "Mark All Read" button is that it doesn't do what
it promises. It eliminates the unread icons on the table that shows each
forum, but once you enter a forum, you still see every post as "Unread."
the only workaround is to open each thread and then navigate away from
it.
